I would love to share the Lotus Mudra Hand Gesture of Loving Kindness with you. It always makes me feel an opening, a receiving and a connection to my heart centre. It invokes gratitude, faith and hope. I have used it consistently in my yoga practice. The lotus connects us to three spheres of earthy existence, the land, sea and the sky. It grows from the mud, through water and ultimately reaching the sky above. A symbol of awakening to the spiritual reality of life. I love it. I hope you will give it a try!
What is a Mudra?
Mudras are a hand or a body gesture that has an influence on the energies of the body and are used to cultivate a specific state of mind. They act upon the body’s subtle energy systems (meridians, chakra, aura) to create a balance of energies, hormones and nerve impulses.
Each mudra represents a certain quality of being. They are a bridge between the inner spiritual experience and the outer world. Mostly the hands and fingers are held in a position, but the whole body may become part of the mudra. The word Mudra is formed in two parts: mut = bliss and ra = to draw. To draw bliss.
Each finger is related to a different element and part of the body:
The thumb – is the fire element – and the Solar Plexus chakra
The index finger – is the air – the Heart chakra
The middle finger – the ether – Throat, 3rd Eye and Crown chakra
The ring finger – the earth – Root chakra
Little finger – the water element – Sacral chakra
Your hands are full of meridians and energy centers, like an electrical energy base. In fact, the palm of the hand is where you find little heart chakras! It is a beautiful thought that when we touch another person or shake hands with them we are exchanging heart energy!
What is the Lotus Mudra?
The Lotus Mudra opens the heart chakra and is a symbol of purity, light and beauty. It offers purification of the heart chakra (Anahata).
If you think about it, a lotus flower sits on the surface of a pond, it opens to the sun and at the same time its roots are deeply embedded in the muddy bottom, it holds firm and strong. This mudra has a spiritual message and meaning. It is about evolving and expanding into our Universe. We grow through the challenges of life to the surface into the Light.
The Lotus Mudra is a hand gesture of loving kindness and reminds us of the qualities of compassion, forgiveness and the beauty and grace that lie within each of us. An awakened heart centre is a sacred space that is filled with the joy of life. As we practice the Lotus Mudra we are reminded to cultivate faith as we stay rooted and grounded.
Lotus Mudra Hand Gesture of Loving Kindness
Form this mudra at any time throughout your day for no less than a minute.
- Form the mudra by connecting the thumbs and the little fingers, opening your other fingers outwards to create a bowl or flower shape with the pads of your lower hands together.
- Place this mudra in front of your heart chakra, in the centre of your chest.
- Press your thumbs against your sternum and feel your heart beat.
- Focus your awareness on your heart chakra and visualise the petals of a lotus flower unfurling.
- Take four long slow even breaths.
- Raise this mudra up above your crown chakra at the top of your head.
- Each time you raise the mudra affirm to yourself, saying: “I am love.”
- Lower your hands closing the mudra to prayer position.
- Repeat as many times as is comfortable.

It is always beautiful and powerful to add visualisation into your practice. As you become accustomed to the movement of opening and closing the mudra and raising and lowering the arms you can also visualise that you are opening to a column of white light above your head. This is white healing light of Universal Love, entering from above, taken into your heart mudra and taken as a gift to your heart.
The secret is in repetition and making it a part of your daily/weekly practice.
The message of the lotus mudra is to stay connected to your roots and to open yourself to the light. Life is so much more rewarding and harmonised when we live from an open heart.
Lotus Mudra Balance
When this mudra is formed it balances the energy of the body, of the right and left hemispheres of the brain and it intensifies the flow of prana, chi, life force energy. It redirects this energy towards the heart chakra and creates internal physical relaxation at the same time as opening the heart centre.
This is such a beautiful energetical practice. Its true name is Padma which means Lotus. It is incredibly good for cadio/respiratory and immune systems. On a spiritual level is cultivate compassion, empathy and love – all balancing the heart chakra. Its extremely helpful for those suffering with anxiety or depression.
“Just like the lotus we too have the ability to rise from the mud, bloom out of the darkness and radiate into the world.”
“The Lotus flower that blooms in adversity is he most rare and beautiful of all.”
“It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.” – Buddha
“Out of the mud of your fears, struggles, pain and confusion; the lotus flower of your inner heart will spontaneously grow.”
“You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.” – Buddha
